Browser geolocation

On the Geocoding page, we may use your location automatically only if the browser has already granted permission. Otherwise we do not prompt or locate on load. You can still click Use my location to request access. Coordinates stay in WGS84.

What we send to third-party services

  • LocationIQ / Nominatim (OpenStreetMap) — address strings you search, or latitude/longitude for reverse geocoding, plus a language preference.
  • WeatherAPI.com — latitude/longitude when you view weather for a place.
  • MapFirst basemap — standard map tile/style requests based on the map viewport. The provider may see your IP address.
  • Elevation DEM — coordinates are evaluated against our local DEM on the server.
  • MapFirst — when you use Nearby places search, the query and map area may be sent to MapFirst to show partner place listings and tracked links.

Local data, cache, and sharing

  • Local / session — coordinates and results shown in your browser for the current session.
  • Server cache — geocode results may be cached to reduce provider rate limits.
  • Public shares — only locations you explicitly share become reachable via a link.
  • Private map data — account-bound history is not public by default.

We do not claim that data is never stored. Caching and share features may retain location-related data until you delete it or it expires.

Your controls

  • Deny or revoke browser location permission in your browser settings.
  • Clear local history in your browser storage / site data.
  • Revoke or stop sharing links you created when signed in.
  • Request account deletion or data export by contacting support.

Frequently asked questions

Do you locate me on page load?

No. Browser geolocation runs only after you click an explicit action such as Use my location and grant permission.

Which providers receive my coordinates?

Reverse geocoding may send lat/lng to LocationIQ or Nominatim. Weather views send lat/lng to WeatherAPI. Tile providers see standard map tile requests from your viewport/IP.

Are share links public?

Only locations you explicitly share become reachable via a public link. Private account history is not public by default.

How do I revoke location access?

Use your browser site settings to deny or reset location permission, and clear site data if you want to remove local history.
