Guide, data sources & FAQ

How to use

Search an address, enter WGS84 coordinates, use My Location, or click the map. Read the DEM elevation estimate in metres or feet and optional weather context.

What problem it solves

Provides a quick worldwide elevation estimate for travel planning, outdoor prep and rough terrain context when you lack a survey.

Data sources

Elevation from a local global ~1 km DEM (COG) on our server. Place search via LocationIQ / Nominatim. Weather (if shown) from WeatherAPI.com. Basemap: MapFirst.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the elevation?

It is a coarse DEM estimate (~1 km resolution), not a surveyed height. Expect larger errors in steep or built-up terrain.

Does weather affect elevation?

No. Weather is an independent WeatherAPI lookup shown for context only.

Can I switch metres and feet?

Yes. Use the unit toggle on the tool; the underlying DEM value is stored in metres.

Why is ocean elevation near zero or negative?

DEM samples may return sea-level or bathymetric-adjacent values near coasts. Always verify critical elevations with authoritative sources.
